Last week’s solar eclipse sent Soundgarden’s “Black Hole Sun” back onto the Billboard charts. The 1994 classic sold 1,000 downloads (a 166% increase), streamed 4.2M times (up 34%), and had 2.5M in radio airplay audience. It was enough to put it at No. 1 on Billboard’s Hot Hard Rock Songs chart, which began in 2020 and takes sales, streaming, and radio into account.
According to Billboard, older songs can appear on the multimetric charts “if ranking in the top half and with meaningful reasons for their resurgence.”
“Black Hole Sun” is also No. 13 on Hot Rock Songs, No. 15 Hot Alternative Songs, No. 19 Hot Rock & Alternative Songs, No. 4 on Hard Rock Digital Song Sales, and No. 5 Hard Rock Streaming Songs.
