Recorded music revenues in the United States went up 6% in 2022 as paid subscriptions hit $10 billion, according to a new year-end report from the RIAA.
A few other key takeaways:
Streaming made up 84% of recorded music revenues, with 92 million paid subscriptions.
Last year, for the first time since 1987, the number of vinyl LPs sold in the United States (41 million) surpassed the number of CDs (33 million).
Big box retailers like Walmart and Target sold around 7000 vinyl records in 2015. In 2021, that number was 6.1 million. Indie record stores made up 48% of the market last year.
Paid digital downloads of singles and albums, meanwhile, dropped 20%. In 2012, digital downloads were 43% of the industry’s revenue; in 2022, that number was 3%.
