Sync Things
Metallica hit the Billboard Hot 100 for the first time since 2008 with one of the greatest metal songs of all time, released in 1986, thanks to that Stranger Things scene.
“Master of Puppets” is No. 40 on the Hot 100 and concurrently tops the Hot Hard Rock Songs, Hard Rock Streaming Songs, and Hard Rock Digital Song Sales charts. At No. 7, it’s their first Top 10 in the all-genre Digital Song Sales chart.
The folks at Blackened/Q Prime smartly re-serviced the perfect track to radio (I mean, it’s not like it was charting in 1986), where it debuted at No. 33 on the Mainstream Rock Airplay chart. (Next time someone says, “songs have to be short to get on the radio,” just start yelling “Master! Master!”)
“Master of Puppets” streams shot up 603% to 9.6M official U.S. streams. Downloads went up even higher — 3,722% to 7000, according to Luminate.
The album of the same name is No. 3 on Top Hard Rock Albums, with 13,000 equivalent album units (a 254% increase), and No. 55 on the Billboard 200.
Streams for the band’s overall catalog went up 64% this week.
The biggest songs:
“Master Of Puppets” 9.6M streams
“Enter Sandman” 4M (up 19%)
“For Whom the Bell Tolls” 2.5M (39%)
“One” 2.1M (34%)
“Nothing Else Matters” 2.1M (14%)
As far as full-length records: 1991’s self-titled monster, aka The Black Album, moved 10,000 units (a 25% increase). Ride the Lightning moved 6000 (53%).
Two different versions of Journey’s 1983 hit “Separate Ways” are on the Rock Charts right now, thanks to the remix in the Stranger Things fourth-season trailer and the placement in the eighth episode, which hit Netflix July 1.
