My buddy

Seth Werkheiser
believes every band should have a mailing list.

He recently shared this insight with me as it relates to an upcoming metal festival:

“Last year, I reported that 40% of the bands at Furnace Fest had email lists. I'm following up to inform you that only 27% of the bands at the Decibel Magazine Metal & Beer Fest in Philadelphia have email lists.

Six have websites.

That means four of the 14 bands performing can reach their fans directly via email. Since signing up for all four email lists 25 days ago, I have yet to receive any updates.

Dying Fetus was the only band to ask for my zip code when signing up, which is helpful for segmenting audiences when sending tour announcements.

They’re also the only band that sent a welcome email, along with a “Don't Miss A Single Announcement” campaign linking to their social media accounts, which is fun since we all know that social media platforms are the very best place to miss announcements, as most things we post barely reach 15% of our audience.

(But we’ll keep trying, right?!)

In all of 2024 (as of Saturday, April 6th, less than a week before things kick-off), all 14 bands combined for a total of about 55 social media posts on Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram promoting their appearance at Decibel Beer and Metal Festival.

Of those 55 posts, Biohazard were responsible for 13 of them.

One band posted just once.

Sharing ‘content’ several times a week on social media is great, but since most fans miss your posts, re-use those live photos and stories and videos in your next newsletter, like a tour diary. Then, of course, include a link to your merch store, and your remaining tour dates - not everyone knows you’re on tour!

Metal bands post and share fun and informative content on social media every day - why else would news sites embed those posts and sell ads around them?

I’ll be at Decibel Magazine Metal & Beer Fest later this week - let’s talk about websites and email newsletters!”
