Justice 4 Amie
Dr. Amie Nicole Harwick, a beloved friend, mentor, and/or acquaintance to many in the heavy music community, was senselessly murdered over the weekend. An author and therapist, she was renowned for her empathy, kindness, humor, and style.
Her alleged killer is an ex-boyfriend. After a disturbing chance encounter at a recent event, he allegedly went to her apartment late in the evening on Valentine’s Day, where he laid in wait for her to come home, then ended her time on earth.
She had twice sought restraining orders against this person, the second of which had expired. In times like this, when we feel so powerless as we process our outrage and grief, we often wonder what we can do to move forward. One thing we can do is sign this petition, which demands stronger laws regarding domestic violence, including mandatory longterm counseling for the stalker/abuser.
If you’re friends with Tommy Vext on Facebook, please read the post he shared yesterday. (I’d include it here but I’m not sure whether it was fully public.) Not only was he close with Amie, but he opens up in frank terms about being on both ends of violence. He talks about the strength and work it takes to practice nonviolence, to live with compassion, mercy, and justice. It’s heartfelt and important.
