Longtime readers of this newsletter (and probably newer ones, too) know that I’m constantly on the lookout for new, fast, efficient, and easy-to-use tools with which to keep track of all of the various metrics that have emerged in recent years.
TOTAL FOLLOWERS is a recent discovery that I highly recommend.
The site itself is super simple and clean. Type in the name of an artist and the system spits out a “total follower” count, adding together Instagram, Facebook, Spotify, YouTube, Twitter, and BandsInTown follower counts into a single number.
Of course, this tool will come in handy for my Stream N’ Destroy purposes (and I’ve already assembled a little roundup, which is below), but I’d imagine it’s great for managers, labels, agents, radio folks, publicists, and bands when pitching different potential partners, advertisers, and whathaveyou. The system even provides a shareable square, similar to those end-of-the-year Spotify wrapped graphics.
Between Billboard / Nielsen Music Connect, Alpha Data (formerly BuzzAngle), Rolling Stone, Chartmetric, and the other charts out there, I could see “Total Followers” becoming an equally important number. I like the idea of being able to say, “This band’s last album did this much in total activity during its first week, they have this many total followers, they stream this many songs per week,” etc. It fits right in.
Spotify, YouTube, BandsInTown, and social media aren’t the be all end all — there’s also record sales, ticket sales, merchandise, demographics, regional data - but I’m into this idea of narrowing things down to a single “number” as much as possible.
Here’s a look at a few artists who are relevant to this here newsletter.
One thing to remember is that a lot of these bands have members with large followings on their individual accounts. Andy Biersack’s personal Instagram has 2.4M followers, for example. So I’d recommend checking some of those, as well.
The site is TotalFollowers.com. (Pretty easy to remember.)
