New Luminate Indie Retail Methodology
Luminate (formerly Soundscan) stopped using its old “weighted” sales methodology for independent physical retail store sales (which basically increased sales reported by indie retailers to make up for any unreported sales) at the end of last year. (In response, Hits Daily Double teamed up with Record Store Day and Street Pulse to launch their own chart.)
Now, Luminate is applying a new methodology to independent retail physical sales in the U.S., effective May 31, 2024, via Luminate’s new partnership with StreetPulse, which increased the number of indie stores providing data to Luminate to more than 225 physical locations and 100+ online locations.
Luminate’s new method models store data for non-reporting stores with data from stores of similar types in similar markets. As more stores report data, less data will be modeled. This new methodology is different from the old “weighted” methodology, as it incorporates less modeled data as more stores report.
This will change U.S. physical sales reporting and any metric inside of Music Connect that ingests indie retail data, including Total Album sales, Total Physical Sales, LP / Vinyl sales, CD sales, and Cassette sales, all of which are eligible for the Billboard charts.
Billboard, which creates its charts based on streaming, sales, and airplay data from Luminate, announced the rebranding of its Tastemaker Albums Chart to Indie Store Album Sales.
